Backing Yourself as a Creative: Embracing the Power of Self-Advocacy

As creatives, we often undermine the value and impact of our own work. We focus on the technicalities and skillsets involved, taking for granted the extensive processes and thoughtful considerations that go into each project.

However, a recent experience has shed light on the importance of backing ourselves and effectively communicating the true value of our work.

This realisation has not only transformed the way I approach my professional endeavours but has also had a profound impact on my personal life. In this blog post, I want to share my musings on the significance of self-advocacy and the lessons I've learned along the way.

Recognising the Depth of Our Work

It all began with a seemingly ordinary task, one I’ve done many times before: designing a landing page for a client.

To me, it was a straightforward assignment, but what I didn't realise was the value of the intricate process that unfolded behind the scenes.

As I embarked on the project, I delved into every aspect of creating a captivating and high-converting landing page. From understanding the purpose of the landing page to identifying the target audience, I conducted thorough research to ensure that every element aligned with the client's goals.

Meticulously crafting the messaging and selecting compelling visuals, I aimed to create an impactful user experience.

Writing persuasive and engaging copy, I utilised my expertise in storytelling and persuasive writing to capture the visitors' attention.

Moreover, I dedicated significant time to creative planning, collaborating with the client to align our vision and refine the design until it perfectly reflected their brand's essence. Beyond the visual and content elements, I fine-tuned every detail, from form design to color choices, to optimise the landing page's performance.

The process extended beyond the surface-level design and layout. I facilitated seamless communication with the client and project team, ensuring all aspects were considered and executed flawlessly.

Automating lead capture and nurturing sequences, as well as syncing them with the client's CRM system, maximised efficiency and facilitated a smooth user experience.

The Power of Articulation

While I had always believed in the value of my work, it took an external champion to truly recognise and articulate its significance.

Witnessing my account manager detail each aspect of the process to the client provided a new perspective on the power of articulation.

Their ability to break down and explain every aspect of the work demonstrated an unwavering belief in its value. Their communication allowed the client to grasp the expertise and effort invested in the project.

This experience made me realise the importance of external champions in highlighting the depth and value of our creative endeavours. Sometimes, an external perspective is necessary to shed light on the intricate process we go through to deliver exceptional results. Not only did it deepen the client's understanding but also fostered a sense of trust, credibility, and appreciation.

Moving forward, I hope to embrace self-advocacy as a way to reinforce my confidence in my work and allow others to recognise the depth of my expertise.

Defying Imposter Syndrome

Reflecting on past experiences, I now realise that my hesitance to articulate and advocate for my work stemmed from imposter syndrome.

I had wrongly believed that my work should speak for itself, without the need for self-promotion or explanation. This may also stem from a few instances where my attempts to explain my work were waved away from clients or colleagues who didn’t value the work I was doing in the first place.

However, working within a supportive team and witnessing the positive impact of creative advocacy, I understand the fallacy of this thinking.

Sometimes, we need a cheerleader – someone who can champion our work and communicate its true value.

Without a team to praise you, sometimes the cheerleading responsibilities fall to us.

By embracing the role of our own hype-person, can we overcome imposter syndrome and unlock our full potential?

Expanding the Lesson Beyond Work

This newfound perspective extends beyond professional endeavors; it permeates into our personal lives as well.

We often downplay our achievements and fail to acknowledge the effort and dedication we invest in our passions and personal growth.

Just as we can hype ourselves up in our work life, we can also celebrate our accomplishments, both big and small, in our personal endeavours.

By embracing self-advocacy in all aspects of life, we cultivate a sense of pride, self-worth, and fulfilment.

Backing ourselves and effectively communicating the value of our work is a vital lesson for every creative.

By recognising the depth of our processes, articulating our expertise, and defying imposter syndrome, we can elevate our professional and personal lives.

Let us no longer take for granted the intricate steps and considerations that make our work exceptional. Instead, let's become our own cheerleaders, championing our craft and celebrating our achievements.

As we embrace self-advocacy, we unlock our true potential and inspire others to do the same. It's never too late to be your own hype-person and cultivate a life filled with creativity, confidence, and fulfilment.

So, let's step into the spotlight, back ourselves, and watch our creative potential soar.
